The Best Job You'll Ever Love!
Thirty years ago, I became a father for the first time. Did I know what I was doing? No, but then again, none of us do. Sure, some of us are lucky to be surrounded by our own parents or loved ones with greater experience however it is their experience, we have to forge our own path.
Juggling the responsibilities of life and work is an ongoing struggle, and when you are an entrepreneur, the lines get even more blurry. Work-life balance is a misnomer in my book, and the reality is that, like nature, we move in cycles and seasons.
As an immigrant and entrepreneur with scarce resources, my father had to work long hours, we often went the whole week without seeing him. However, when he did take time off, he was dedicated to weekend picnic trips, fishing, hunting and sports.
Regardless of the season you are in, the spring of grinding hard to build your career or business or the autumn of reaping the benefits of your labours. Remember to invest the time to connect with your kids; their youth will fly by, and as they get older, their own life journey will put distance between you.
Arielle Galinsky, the founder of The Legacy Project, has spent years documenting the contributions of our elders in their twilight years. She found that people never regretted spending too much time with their loved ones as they faced the final chapter of their lives.
Congratulations!
I recently spent some valuable time with a local entrepreneur. He told me that he could not reply to a request because he takes specific time on Saturdays to be with his kids. That may not sound strange, but his being as committed to his kids as he was to his growing business can and should inspire us all.
To all you dads out there, keep up the great work. In 364 days, you want to look back and be proud of the investment you made in your relationships with your kids.
