Derek venait d\u2019un milieu modeste et a grandi dans une ville ouvri\u00e8re difficile. Il a vite compris que, s\u2019il ne changeait pas le cours de sa vie, il risquait de se retrouver en prison \u2014 ou pire. Il a donc choisi de s\u2019enr\u00f4ler dans la Marine. Apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 les tests, on a d\u00e9couvert chez lui un potentiel exceptionnel. Derek s\u2019est investi pleinement et, apr\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es de travail acharn\u00e9, il a termin\u00e9 premier de sa promotion et s\u2019est retrouv\u00e9 sur une voie rapide vers un poste de commandant.<\/p>\n<p>Sous la direction de son premier CO (commanding officer \/ officier commandant), Derek \u00e9tait encourag\u00e9 \u00e0 tester des id\u00e9es et \u00e0 imaginer de nouvelles fa\u00e7ons d\u2019am\u00e9liorer les proc\u00e9dures et m\u00e9thodes existantes. Il a r\u00e9ussi ses examens de comp\u00e9tences et men\u00e9 son \u00e9quipe \u00e0 battre les records de performance du navire. Son CO l\u2019a promu et lui a offert le choix de ses affectations. Derek a choisi l\u2019Arleigh Burke, le tout nouveau destroyer de haute technologie de la Marine.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 son arriv\u00e9e, il s\u2019est rapidement familiaris\u00e9 avec les syst\u00e8mes du navire. Cependant, son nouveau CO \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent du pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent. Au lieu d\u2019avoir la libert\u00e9 de trouver ses propres solutions, Derek devait d\u00e9sormais suivre les instructions \u00e0 la lettre. Lorsqu\u2019il a respectueusement sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 une am\u00e9lioration possible, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 rapidement et publiquement remis \u00e0 sa place. Il n\u2019a pas fallu longtemps pour que son enthousiasme diminue, et graduellement, m\u00eame ses r\u00e9sultats aux tests de performance ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 chuter.<\/p>\n<p>Heureusement, la Marine surveillait le rendement de ce CO, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9trograd\u00e9 et affect\u00e9 \u00e0 un autre poste. Le nouveau CO a pris le temps de conna\u00eetre ses officiers et leurs forces, puis les a fait repasser les tests.
